As the delay element in the control circuit, the time relay can be divided into four categories according to the working principle:
 
1. Electromagnetic time relay
 
It is made by the principle of electromagnetic inertia, with simple structure, long life, high allowable operating frequency, but short delay time. Used in DC control loops.
 
2. Air damping time relay
 
It is made by the principle of air damping time delay, the time delay range is wide, up to 0.4~0.8s, and it works reliably. It is a commonly used time relay in machine tools.
 
3. Electronic time relay
 
It is made by the principle of controlling the charging and discharging of the capacitor by the electronic circuit, the volume is small, and the delay range can reach 0.1~300s.
 
4. Electric time relay
 
Made using the principle of a synchronous motor. The structure is complex, the volume is large, but the delay time is long, and the adjustable range is wide, from a few seconds to tens of minutes, and the longest can reach several hours.
 
When choosing a time relay, the main consideration is the delay mode of the delay contact required by the control loop (power-on delay or power-off delay), and the number of instantaneous contacts. Choose different types of time relays according to different usage conditions.
 
The most widely used air damping time relay in machine tool control is the JS7-A series. The delay range is 0.4~60s and 0.4~180s.
